The Complete Medical Guide, 2014
thread, book
Many books (religious texts, for example) are endowed with a great deal of authority and power. While this medical text may be understood as containing pertinent information or carrying a certain amount of authority, the “Complete Medical Guide” actually dates from 1958 and much of the information within is out-dated (and sexist). Although always open, the pages of this book cannot be turned, and the information within cannot be fully accessed. This work plays with notions of authority and what we perceive as relevant or reliable information and what it means for us to have free access to, or to be denied access to, such information.
