Stasis, 2015
glass, clear silicone medium, narcissus bulbs
For this piece, seven partially sprouted narcissus bulbs are suspended in transparent gel. Perpetually imprisoned in this incomplete state, they are unable to grow into the cheerful spring flowers many of us know as daffodils. In opposition to their friendly looking blooms, narcissus bulbs contain narcotic toxins, which can induce numbness of the nervous system and paralyses of the heart, ultimately resulting in death. While, on the one hand, the potential for beauty is denied, on the other hand, the risk of danger is contained. This work, intended as a counterpart to Revival, centres around themes of confinement, paralysis and arrested development.
